Most folks would agree that hot dogs are not that good for you.

They're loaded with nitrates, and nitrates have been linked to cancer.

But when you top your dog with sauerkraut, the harmful effects of the "meat" are mitigated to some degree.

It seems that sauerkraut is "high in a powerful compound that may stop the nitrates from converting into carcinogens."

So says Nancy Kalish in an article titled, "Eat This AND That," which appeared in Healthy Style Magazine.

Apparently, there are several food combinations that can lessen the damaging effects of everything from salty foods such as fries and chips to high-fat meals such as fried chicken with mashed potatoes.

Of course, the match that caught our eye was red meat served with red wine.

"Drinking a glass of red wine with your steak can cut down on your body's absorption of toxins that can lead to heart disease," writes Kalish. "But don't overindulge: Seven ounces is all you need to benefit."

That's a "standard-sized" glass (about 5 ounces) with a couple of ounces thrown in for "dessert."
