The Hess Collection is one of the Napa Valley's "destination" wineries, known not only for its great wines, but also as home to some of the more significant holdings in the personal art collection of Donald Hess.

Now, at age 75, Hess has decided to take life a little easier. He has announced his retirement from day-to-day operations of his far-flung wine company, but will remain as Chairman of the Board.

Wineries can be small, family-operated businesses.

They also can be big businesses. Very big.

We were reminded of this recently when Brown-Forman sold Fetzer Vineyards in Mendocino County, California, to Chilean wine producer Vina Concha y Toro.

If there were any doubts that Malbec is the wine variety of the moment, sales figures recently released by the Symphony IRI Group (SIRI) put them to rest.

SIRI compiles data based on items scanned at major supermarkets and drug stores. For the first quarter of 2011, dollar sales at retail for wines from Argentina increased by an impressive 34 percent.

During the 1990s, Chateau-Grillet fell on hard times, at least from a product consistency perspective.

The U.S. surpassed France as the world's largest wine-consuming nation in 2010, with wine shipments to the U.S. from California, other states and foreign producers growing 2% from the previous year to nearly 330 million cases, a record high for the industry.

Wine industry consultant Gomberg, Fredrikson & Associates compiles the statistics.

The wine business certainly is not immune to America's... and the world's... economic conditions.

Because Oregon's Willamette Valley Vineyards is a publicly-traded company, we're able to take a look at its financial results, and its numbers tell what many believe is a common tale in the wine business today.
