If you're planning a visit to China, be aware that the Australian wine you buy in a wine shop or order in a restaurant many not be Australian at all.

Now comes word that Chinese counterfeiters are bottling "knock-offs" of well-known Australian wine brands, putting who-knows-what in the bottle and then adding a label claiming the wine is from a known Aussie wine estate...

First, there were problems with some corks failing to do an adequate job of keeping air out of wine bottles. (Exposure to air hastens a wine's aging process, causing it to reach its prime before its time.)

Then, seeing their market share and livelihoods threatened, growers of cork trees began to fight back....

The 1900s was, by virtually all accounts, the "American Century," and many people believe that the 2000s will be the "Chinese Century."

That assertion extends to the world of wine, and some just-released statistics lend some credence.

For most of the 20th century, the United States was the leading importer of Bordeaux wines outside of Europe...
